ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Mr Scott Thompson

Hello Currimundi Community,
The term is disappearing before our eyes, moving way too quickly. Can I thank you all for your co-operation so far this term, with all the wet weather we have had and the safety you have shown around our car parks. In speaking of safety, can I ask that you have a discussion with your child around road safety and etiquette on the footpaths.
This past week I have had a number of reports from parents/carers and concerned community members of near misses of our Curra kids. Reports of children on E scooters riding in between and behind buses, children not waiting for the lights to change properly and just riding their bikes straight across the road. I know it’s a very busy place and traffic flow and parking are not ideal; however, I would very much appreciate you having a safety talk with your child and just a gentle reminder on how to travel safely on our roads.
CROSS COUNTRY
Our school Cross Country is approaching fast and I’m happy to announce that this year our Prep – Yr 02 students will be competing for the first time. How this will look is being decided now, however you can rest assured that they will be participating on Tuesday 12 March 2024. Stay tuned for more information.
AMAZING WORK
I had the pleasure of meeting Kai from 2Z this morning, he showed me his procedure writing he had done at home all by himself. It was absolutely amazing, because I love a good hot dog. I now have his Hot Dog Procedure pinned to my wall.
Yesterday our leadership team were lucky enough to visit Year 01, 02 and 05 to discuss with some children their goals and work they were doing. We were blown away by how confident our Curra kids were in talking about their work, what was expected of them, their goals and the feedback their teachers had given them on their next steps. Our school is really humming at the moment. Our teachers have set high standards and our kids are flying.
Our Year 06 students had their Stanley Rivers Leadership Day on Wednesday 21 February 2024 and had an absolute ball. By all accounts it was a brilliant day. I would like to congratulate our Year 06 cohort on their team work, conduct and attitude. Speaking with the Stanley River Team afterwards, they were really happy to pass on that our 06’s were one of the best groups they have worked with for a very long time. Keep up the great work Year 06.
CURRA ATHLETES
A huge shout out to Carolina – 6C, Kenzie – 6C and Thea – 5H who are all off to the Coastal District Swim Trials this Friday 23 Feb 2024. We wish you all the best girls, swim your hearts out and do the best you can.
SPARKS
Our SPARKS Program will kick off this coming Tuesday 27 February 2024. It is unique to our school and gives our Year 04 - 06 students an opportunity to try activities they otherwise would not get an opportunity to do. Can I encourage you to get in there give it a go, and have some fun even though it may not be your first choice activity.
UNIFORM
Uniform is a major focus for the school this term. At Currimundi we have a Dress Code that details uniform information. Most students are following the uniform code. Some items that have needed to be addressed in the first 5 weeks are related to:
- Earrings: should be plain small sleeper or plain stud (not pictures or designs)
- Necklaces/chains: Should not be worn
- Socks: White ankle length socks without logos and colours (no clack socks)
Please see the CURRENT DRESS CODE for clarification of expectations.
MOBILE PHONES AND SMARTWATCHES
This year Education Queensland released the 2024 Strategy, “Away for the Day”.
“Queensland state schools are committed to reducing the distraction of mobile devices to provide optimal learning environments for all students.
For the purpose of this procedure, mobile devices include mobile phones, wearables such as smartwatches, handheld devices and other emerging technologies which have the ability to connect to telecommunication networks or the internet.
All state school students must keep mobile phones switched off and ‘away for the day’ during school hours. Wearable devices, such as smartwatches, must have notifications switched off so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours.”
The Currimundi Code of Conduct is currently being reviewed to reflect this change. Until this is fully reviewed, we ask that students’ hand in all SMART WATCHES to the Teacher Aide Room in the Administration Building, when they arrive in the morning, then pick them up at the end of the day. The same procedure as currently used for mobile phones.
An email was sent to all families in regards to the 2024 CODE OF CONDUCT REVIEW Feel free to have your say by completing the Review.
Have a great weekend
Thanks for your supporting our friendly little school by the beach.
Cheers

Regards,
Scott Thompson

Deputy Principal | Prep – Yr 02 | Mrs Tina Houtsma

We're halfway through the term, and I just have to share how awesome the start of this year has been! The buzz around school is just amazing; our kids have jumped into the year full of energy and a real excitement for learning. It's so great to see them all in their school uniforms, showing off that team spirit and making us all proud.
And let's not forget our fantastic teachers and staff! They're doing such a great job connecting with the kids and helping them find their way. It's all about making school a positive place where everyone can thrive, and they're totally nailing it. Here's to keeping up this amazing vibe for the rest of the year!
Learning Highlight
Class 1C took centre stage at the parade with their rendition of the "Months of the Year" song, delighting everyone by spotlighting significant occasions in various months such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, and the birthdays of Mrs Saxvik and Mrs Cowley 😊
Preps in the News
Out Prep students had big smiles for the Sunshine Coast Daily photographer who visited our school recently to take class photos for their annual ‘My First Year’ publication.
A pictorial memento of Sunshine Coast Prep students, including our Currimundi Prep Classes was published in the Sunshine Coast Daily online on Friday 15 February and a print edition will be out in the Sunshine Coast Daily on Thursday 28 March.
Easter Hat Parade
Prep, Year 01 and Year 02 students have begun to practice their Easter dances are eager to perform them on Thursday 28 March in front of an audience.
Time to get out your hot glue guns and creative ideas for our annual Prep to Year 02 Easter Hat Parade

Before School Routine
The school office opens its doors at 8:15 am, and for safety reasons, it is advised that students should not arrive prior to this time. Upon their arrival, students are required to wait in specific areas designated for each year group. Then, at 8:35 am, the playing of music serves as a cue for students to proceed to their classroom pickup area.

RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY | Friday 22 March 2024
Join in the fun on National Ride2School Day by encouraging your students to ride, walk, skate or scoot to school.
National Ride2School Day is the perfect opportunity for students and school communities across Australia to embrace a healthier start and to try riding and walking to school for themselves. Let’s get out and be active!!
Each year we love to encourage students to make their way to school in an active way on this day. We gather data from those who participate. All methods of coming to school should be safe and involve helmets and appropriate safety gear. Why not join your child for some active fun!
Should your child scoot or skate, please take these items home with you after arrival and ensure that bikes have a lock when placed in the bike rack.
We are currently running a colouring in competition for Prep – Year 02 and Year 03 - 06 which involves colouring the promotion poster. The poster is attached and students can also get a copy from their teacher if they are interested.

All parents/carers are welcome to attend this event and can also purchase food at the event for their child.
NAPLAN YEAR 03 & 05
NAPLAN officially runs between Wednesday 13 to Friday 22 March. The timetable caters for tests being on separate days to avoid stress and fatigue. Should your child be away, there are makeup test times across the week.
To prepare them, the Year 03 and 05 students are provided practice tests next week, to allow them to engage with the delivery method and platform.
Year 03 engage with iPads and Year 05 with Laptops.
Please remind your child that NAPLAN is about having a go and doing their best, and that everyone’s best looks different.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
YEAR 03
Our 2023 Year 02 students are settling in well to their new classes for 2024 and we are all getting to know each other. We are excited to announce that the Year 03 students will be holding a REPTILE ADVENTURES Incursion on Tuesday 26 March 2024, this term.
This hands-on experience aligns with the Year 03 Science unit on living things and lifecycles. All details are on QParents and payments are due Monday 18 March 2024.
YEAR 04
Classrooms are looking engaging and spectacular with Mission SOS (SAVE OUR SEAS) well underway.
Later this Term, we will be visited by the Sunshine Coast Council Coastal Discovery Van - Thursday 28 March. They run a free hands-on program called Ready, Steady, Recycle. Students are always engaged with this program that compliments their classroom learning perfectly.
Last week Year 04 celebrated Valentine’s Day with a dress up day of fun.
YEAR 05
We have had a busy start of the year. On Friday 16 February morning the Year 05 students attended Year 06 Investiture. This formal ceremony involved students receiving badges and celebrating all of our Year 06 students as school leaders.
The event causes a lot of chat within Year 05, as they discuss whether or not they wish to apply for a leadership position later in the year.
The first opportunity has been offered this week with Tuckshop Helper applications. Interested students completed these and will return them by this Friday 23 February.
In Term 2 we will open up Aspirant Leader applications. This program allows students to experience working in 2 Portfolio areas across the remainder of the year and gives them a taste of Leadership in preparation for Year 06. More information will be provided next Term.
YEAR 06
Year 06 has had a busy start to the year. The formal investiture ceremony last Friday 16 February involved students receiving badges and celebrating all of our Year 06 students as school leaders. The cake, of course, was a highlight!
Yesterday, Wednesday 21 February 2024, the students participated in many leadership activities for the entire day. The activities encourage team work, solving problems and provide leadership opportunities. The Stanley River Environment Centre presenters were impressed with the student’s engagement in this space and the teachers commented that they saw some of the best leadership skills they ever had! Next Wednesday 28 February afternoon at 1:55pm we have local State High Schools visiting our students to discuss opportunities for enrolment for 2025.
Parents/Carers are welcome to attend this session also. Please see the email sent home last week for further information regarding the High School Transition process for 2024.

CURRICULUM NEWS | MRS JODIE FINDLAY

As children progress through their school years, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress. For more information, see the NAP website.

The NAPLAN test window is 9 days:
Wednesday 13 March 2024 to Monday 25 March 2024
In preparation for NAPLAN, Year 03 & Year 05 students will be completing an omnibus (mixed) test to familiarise students/teachers with the test environment and to identify any problems that may be encountered.
To explore what the online test platform will look like for students and the nature of questions, you can visit the Public Demonstration website. This site provides example tests across each test area.
What’s new in the demonstration tests?
There is now a narrative task and a persuasive task for students to practise. Only one of these tasks will be tested in NAPLAN 2024, and this will be revealed on the day of the assessment.
Students will now start the conventions of language test with the spelling items and finish with the grammar and punctuation items.
Privacy
Policies and procedures are in place to ensure personal information is protected in the online environment.

YMCA OSHC NEWS

Though the weather this month has been quite unforgiving with wet weather events keeping us inside, that has not stopped us from burning all the afternoons’ energy off with plenty of games of basketball, dodgeball, kick tennis and noodle tag to name some favourites.
The girls have finally set foot back into the spotlight, dancing and singing to their favourite Taylor Swift songs as Taylor tours Australia.
As you go into the quiet room, you might notice we have been a little busy creating all new artworks to take home to our families.
We have been experimenting with paints, sensory sand, clay and multi-modal forms of artwork to create shapes and images.
Overall it has been a fantastic month with our little friends and we can’t wait to see what’s coming in March!
