PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Ms Jillian Pass

Welcome back everyone to school for term 2. We have a number of new families joining us this term with students across all year levels. Thank you also for the very warm welcome that I have received after taking a wonderfully long break during which I explored a large part of Australia.
School Events
As always, term 2 is event filled with Athletics days, P&C Mother’s Day stall, school disco, a variety of year level excursions and TUFF Curra to name only a few scheduled activities.
We love our school in its beachside location but as local residents of the area you will also know how taxing the location is on buildings. Ongoing maintenance will commence next week.
Last year the school was successful in receiving a grant to improve our some of our playground areas. I am very excited to confirm that the year 01 and 02 playground will be replaced over the coming June holidays.

An event of particular mention next week is of course our whole school ANZAC parade.
Everyone is invited to attend what is always a very moving service that is led by our school leaders. All classes have contributed to this parade in some way and many of our students will be active participants in the parade.
Our combined school choir and Curra kids Show Choir led by Alison Schulz and Jen Young will perform a very special ANZAC song written by Jen Young.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Your education,
Jillian Pass
Principal
Deputy Principal | Prep – Yr 02 | Mrs Tina Houtsma

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone managed to have a lovely Easter and enjoyed some quality time with family and friends. I was greeted by many happy faces and have heard so many stories about the student’s holidays.
EASTER HAT PARADE
The students looked amazing in their hats and had a lovey time parading around the school before ending in the hall where we had a lot of fun doing a few dances and showing off our hats to our visiting families.
It was a wonderful turn out and our CURRA Kids all had a ‘hopping’ good time dancing with and showing off their hats to you all. If you were not able to make it, I hope you enjoyed seeing all the pictures on Facebook.
REMINDER: BEFORE SCHOOL ROUTINE
The school office opens its doors at 8:15 am and for safety reasons, it is advised that students should not arrive prior to this time. Upon their arrival, students are required to wait in specific areas designated for each year group. Then, at 8:35 am, the playing of music serves as a cue for students to proceed to their classroom pickup area.

PLAYGROUND RULES
Just a reminder that all school rules still apply before and after school when on school grounds.

PREP 2025
Starting school is an exciting time for students and parents/carers. The first step is to determine when your child can commence. Use the online calculator to see when your child can start Prep. Simply select your child's month and year of birth.
If you have a child starting Prep in 2025, please notify the office as we are now taking enrolments.
PRE-PREP TRANSITION PROGRAM
We have a busy term ahead with a few opportunities for Pre-Preps to come along and join in some of our activities.

SCHOOL TOURS
Commencing this term, I will be conducting regular school tours for families wanting to enrol or wanting to know more about what our friendly little school by the beach can offer their child. I am looking forward to meeting all prospective parents/carers. Bookings are now open.
MOTHER’S DAY STALL
Once again, the P&C will be holding their Mother’s Day stall on Thursday 02 May 2024. All classes will have the opportunity to visit the stall during the day to purchase gifts ranging from $1 - $10. If you would like students to purchase, please send an appropriate amount of money with your child or pre-purchase vouchers through Munch Monitor.
Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 12 May this year. Happy Mother’s Day to all our CURRA mums, grandmothers and carers.
Enjoy your special day! I hope you have a lovely day and are showered with love and appreciation from your family.

Kind Regards

EARTH DAY
Monday April 22 2024
Planet vs. Plastics

The annual celebration of our planet is next week, but do you know why we celebrate?
Here's what to know about Earth Day.
Earth Day 2024 Theme
The theme of Earth Day 2024 is ‘Planet vs. Plastics’. This is about fighting the big problem of plastic all over the world. Earth Day organisation wants to bring people from different places together. The goal is to make much less plastic, 60% less by 2040. We want a future without so much plastic. This is not just about having less rubbish, but it is also about keeping us and the environment healthy.

Why do we celebrate Earth Day?
Earth Day is about celebrating the progress of the environmental movement and its efforts to help the planet.
Earth Day is an annual celebration that honours the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations.
When was the first Earth Day?
The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970, and essentially founded the environmental movement. It was organised by politicians and students worried about conservation of the environment.
How do we celebrate Earth Day today?
Earth Day is still celebrated through activism and individuals doing their part by volunteering in their communities and educating themselves on environmental issues.
Earth Day activities
Earth Day activities are fun. They help everyone’s future. These activities are good for the Earth and for all of us. Please click on the link for a list of the best Earth Day activities for students, kids, and adults. Click here for EARTH Day Activities
NAPLAN - How is my child’s performance reported?
From 2023, NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. They are set at a challenging but reasonable level expected for the child at the time of NAPLAN testing, based mainly on what has been taught in previous years of schooling.
Student achievement is shown against 4 levels of proficiency:
Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.
A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided by your child’s school later in the year. If you do not receive a report, you should contact your child’s school.
How are NAPLAN results used?
- Students and parents/carers use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
- Teachers use results to help identify students who need greater challenges or extra support.
- Schools use results to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- School systems use results to review the effectiveness of programs and support offered to schools.
- The community can see information about the performance of schools over time at myschool.edu.au
Kind Regards
Jodie Findlay

BOOK CLUB-Issue 3 | Due Friday 26 April 2024
Currimundi State School participates in Scholastic Book Club. There are 8 issues per year (2 per term).
Issue 3 will be sent home end of week 1!
This issue comes with the chance to qualify for $5 credit on the next Book Club Issue 4.

In here you’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $3).
The Book Club LOOP platform for parents/carers allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at Scholastic LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
The school no longer accepts payments using cash.
Online Orders Only. No Cash Orders
Every book sold through Book Club earns free books and resources for our library for our staff and students to enjoy!
