PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Ms Jillian Pass

Welcome Back
A very warm welcome to all our students and their families. I hope everyone had a relaxing break and is ready for a productive and busy school year ahead. A special welcome goes out to all our new families. We have had a great start to the year with very good attendance and lots of Curra kids expected behaviour on display.
As you would appreciate, we work very diligently in our classroom formation process to best place students and to predict student numbers as they will be on day 8 of the new school year. I am very pleased to confirm that all classes are confirmed this year and there will be no need to change to our classes.
Parent Partnership meetings

At Currimundi State School, we know that strong partnerships between home and school are the biggest predictors of student success. To promote and grow these strong partnerships, we organise an afternoon very early in the new school year. Now that our teachers and students have settled into their class groups, rooms and routines, we would like to take the opportunity to invite you to attend our ‘Parent Partnership Afternoon’ to be held on Tuesday 11 February, 2025. Meet the Teacher – 3:00 – 3:30pm in child’s classroom and then Sausage Sizzle – 3:30 – 4:00pm centre covered area near Tuckshop.
All families received an email regarding Parent Partnership Afternoon.
To assist us to plan accordingly for future events, please indicate you interest in attending the event though the link below.
This replaces the link sent yesterday.
To ensure the accuracy of responses received, please complete one response per family.
Wednesday School breakfast – Education Qld initiative
In 2024, with the support of our P&C, we applied for and were successful in gaining a grant that will contribute to funding a School Food Program (breakfast) at Currimundi State School. The breakfast will be a weekly event in weeks 2 to 10 each term this year. At this stage we believe funding will take us to week 9 in term 4.

Where: Covered are near tuckshop
When: Wednesday breakfasts start at 8.15am and ends when the music starts to go into class.
We know most of our Curra kids will have had breakfast each week but all are welcome to come along grab a piece of fruit, pancake or toast and enjoy catching up with friends. Mr D (Dave Larkin) our new Student Well-Being Officer will be helping at the breakfasts each week and is looking forward to catching up with parents/carers and students at this time.
Eating breakfast and lunch is important for:
meeting a child’s daily nutrient needs (including vitamins and minerals) for healthy growth and development
improving the child’s concentration and attention span, making them ready to learn
reducing hunger and fatigue which may improve behaviour and mood.
Yours in education
Jillian Pass

Deputy Principal | Yr 03 - 06 | Amelia Tolliday

Hello to all the wonderful families at Currimundi State School. My name is Amelia Tolliday and I am Deputy Principal for the year 03 – 06 this term.
I must say what a warm welcome I have had from the school community – the values of Currimundi; Caring, Respectful, Responsible and An Active Learner are certainly very strong throughout the school. I am very excited to be at CSS in 2025 and experience all the great things that the friendly little school by the beach has to offer our students.
All our students have had a strong start to the school year and have settled into their classes well. A huge shout out to all the teachers for their efforts ensuring all our kids are off to the very best start.
Activities, Excursions and upcoming Events
Shortly you will receive the Activity and Excursion planner list for your child’s year level. Term 1 is proving to be a busy term for all year levels however some highlights for our year 03 to year 06 classes include, surf lifesaving, cross country, foreshore excursions and of course, our year 06 Investiture where 2025 leaders are given their badges – a full list of activities for each level will follow shortly.
Our teachers are working hard to get to know your child and support their learning journey. In week 3 we have our Parent Partnerships Meeting where you will be able to gain a comprehensive understanding of what is taking place in the classroom this year and how your child will be assessment. I would encourage all parents/carers to take this opportunity and engage with the classroom teacher so learning can be supportive at home as well as at school. During the afternoon I will be visiting classrooms and be near the BBQ, please take the time to pop by to say hi.
Parades
Senior Parades are on odd weeks, with the next being week 3 - Monday 10 February at 2:00pm in the School Hall. All parents and carers are welcome. There will be seating provided for you at the back of the hall.
Being responsible and taking pride in our school.
I have been very impressed with the pride students take in wearing the Currimundi uniform – the school is a uniform school and I would like to take the opportunity to remind that full school uniform is required every day. We will continue to remind student of school based expectations. Please touch base with your child’s classroom teacher if there is a concern with uniform.

Deputy Principal | Prep – Yr 02 | Mrs Amanda Brewer

Welcome back to a warm, wet Term 1!
Our junior students have returned eager to learn with a new class, teacher and curriculum. Thank you to parents and carers for the obvious preparation that you undertook behind the scenes to have you chid ready and eager to return or start school for the first time! Welcome to our new Prep families and other new families in Year 01 and 02. Communication is the key to fostering a great home/school relationship. Should you need to share information or ask questions please make a time with your child’s teacher. Mornings and afternoons are great for a quick touch base, however are busy. Should you require more time or privacy, please ask for a separate time that suits all of you. Email and phone calls are always available to schedule if you cannot make it to the school. Our first formal parent communication event is Tuesday 11 Feb and the details have been sent out to you via email.
We held our first Junior parade on Monday 3 Feb at 2:00pm in the hall. Parade is a great way to connect with the school and perhaps have the opportunity to see your child receive an award or a free ice block in the blue ticket draw. Our Preppies attended the first parade and were totally amazing (and amazed) considering the new experience and the business of it all! Parades are on even weeks and all parents/carers are welcome.
I am looking forward to getting to know the junior students and families, some of who I already know from the senior school.
Regards

Tips for Settling Back in To School
A big welcome to all of our new and returning families to our wonderful school by the beach. Our teachers have spent many hours in preparation to make it a great start for all students and families.
1. Talk with your kids about adopting a growth mindset: Kids need to hear that their abilities are not 'fixed' at birth, and that there is always room to improve.
2. Model kind behaviour and manners: If we model kindness in our own interactions, this can go a long way towards showing children how to treat others and how we want to be treated. This could mean practising emotional first aid, helping your child's teacher to create a more inclusive classroom and modelling inclusive behaviour outside of school, or simply focusing on saying 'please' and 'thank you' at the appropriate times
3. Get creative: Start a daily learning 'ritual' at home. It might be before school, after school or at night, before bed. Ideas:
- reading books together in a special chair or in bed
- googling something together that you both want to know more about, or finding a book at the library to share on a topic that interests your child - let them have 3 - 5 minutes to tell you all about it while you just listen or cook dinner or in the car
- practising something they need to work on in their learning as you drive or walk to school e.g., times tables, counting games like counting to 100 but leaving out all the numbers that have a 9 in them
- having a special snack together for afternoon tea before they do their homework and asking your child to tell you one thing they learned about that day while you chat or having dinner together at the table when you can, and creating space for the kids to talk about their day without the TV on
4. Build healthy habits: Children learn best when their physical and emotional needs are met.
5. Love unconditionally: Want to raise an amazing adult? This is how.
Reading Eggs, Mathseeds & Mathletics

We are excited to announce that your child will have access to ABC Reading Eggs at school – the fun and effective program that teaches children how to read! You will receive a letter/information from your teacher that contains your child’s Login Name and Password about how to use ABC Reading Eggs. ABC Reading Eggs is designed to get your child motivated and excited about reading. Your child will be able to access the program in class and at home. The attached reading eggs parent’s brochure details all the features and benefits of ABC Reading Eggs and how it can teach your child to read. Mathseeds was created specifically for the needs of early maths learners in Years Prep–1 and is included with your Reading Eggs program.
Mathletics is the comprehensive online mathematics learning tool that brings joy to learning in years 02 – 06.

NAPLAN in mid-March 2025
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 03, 05, 07 and 09 sit each year. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards. NAPLAN will commence on 12 March 2025, in Term 1. Visit nap.edu.au for more information.
More information to follow this term. Further information can be found here:
Department of Education International
Online: Beginner Language Experience

Global Engagement, within the Department of Education International is offering Queensland state school students in Years 04 – 06 an exciting opportunity to learn a new language from the comfort of their own home. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, students will develop their language skills while broadening their cultural understanding and developing their global competence.
Participants will connect with experienced university tutors in an engaging online environment, where they will enjoy a fun learning experience over 5 consecutive days.
There is an upcoming April school holiday online program (exact days to be advised) called Beginner Language Experience.
This program not only introduces participants to a new language and deepens their understanding of its associated culture, but also equips them with the knowledge, skills and cultural awareness needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Currimundi State School participates in Scholastic Book Club. There are 8 issues per year (2 per term). Issue 1 were sent home week 1!
In here you’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $3).
The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. The school no longer accepts payments using cash.

P&C Fundraising News!
Hello Currimundi Families,
I hope you’ve all had an amazing summer with your Curra kids at home!
This will be my last update as the fundraising officer as I step away from this role for our final year at Currimundi.
It’s been an amazing roller coaster of adventures over the last few years I’ve been fundraising and I feel proud and incredibly blessed to have been able to create some wonderful events for our families and have helped support our school financially.
I will be continuing on the P&C but not in this role.
Going forward this sector of the P&C is obviously going to look very different, we will be encouraging anyone who wants to join the P&C and try their hand at putting together an event or fundraiser to reach out to us and we (the P&C) can provide support and guidelines going forward, we have other members that would love to team up and put on events.
Term 1 will see the P&C holding a picture plates fundraiser - these products are great for keepsakes and this also will be running in perfect timing for Mother’s Day gifts - so keep a look out for the templates and orders forms being sent home.
We will also be running our fill the pantry - Tuckshop fundraiser - look out for those flyers mid-term.
Term 3 will see our P&C supporting the school with the “Frozen” musical with finances/ticket sales/canteen and hopefully a monster raffle.
And Term 4 will hopefully see the return of our wonderful trivia night.
We ask that if you are passionate about wanting to continue seeing events and fundraising activities take place within our community that you come along and join the P&C so it can happen - we’ve got endless possibilities of discos/Mother’s and Father’s Day events/movie nights/BBQ’s as well as plenty of potential for new ideas but we need volunteers to put their hands up to make them happen.
I want to thank the Currimundi community for all your support over the last few years with all of our fundraisers and events - it’s been incredible seeing the joy on our Curra kids faces as our ideas have been brought to life.
Thank you
Bec
Currimundi State School P&C fundraising officer & VP

YMCA OSHC NEWS

School holidays flew bye. The first day back for 2025 the theme was the great outdoors. The children began their day with building indoor tents and having story time on cushions. The children shared their holiday stories and special activities that they experienced over the holidays. Outside the children participated in a scavenger hunt and some bug exploration. This set the tone for a fun three weeks ahead. The Big Bang Science Show Incursion meant lots of investigating, thinking and planning. Lots of discoveries were made riding the Go Carts around the school and we tried to cope with the current heatwave by having lots of water fun with our Summer Splash incursion. Our 3D Model Incursion supported our creativity with the children painting mystic creatures. Staff and children went to an Excursion at the Ninja Jungle and enjoyed learning various gymnastic moves in small groups. The Silks were the favourite activity. The service days we learned through art and craft about countries around the world; how to create a board game; various animals living in the Rainforest; Outer space and had fun with music. A fun filled time!

Thank you, The Y Staff.

Jordy 8th
Koa managed 1st in both the heats and the final - very convincing wins!

U10 Female Board Race (final)

U10 Male Beach Flags (final)
Jordy 3rd
U10 Cameron Relay (board/run/swim/run)
Koa was on the board, Jordy was the swimmer and their team placed 1st by a country mile! (Out of 24 teams)
U10 Board Relay
Koa and Jordy were in a team of 3 with very difficult conditions, Jordy had an unlucky start with massive waves dumping the start line but made up great ground bringing the team into 3rd place, with their second paddler pushing them into 2nd - Koa was the teams last paddler and was stung by a blue bottle during his paddle but that did not stop him as he brought it home with a set wave from the back cans and a sprint finish claiming 1st place.
Special mention to Allyra in her all girls team up against the boys, getting her team into 3rd place after Allyra’s amazing paddle, with their team finishing in top 10. (Out 22 teams)
We are all so very proud of our Curra kids for putting in maximum efforts in such trying conditions, and even getting stung by blue bottles whilst racing.
Koa also recently competed in the Single Fin Comp (pre 1985 boards) hosted by WindandSea Boardriders and made the finals of the Under 18’s division, finishing in 4th place. Koa was the youngest competitor in the division, surfing up against 14/15 year-olds - one being ex Curra Kid Cale in the final (who placed 1st).

This online workshop will focus on the basics about inclusive education – the definition, what it looks like, and why it is so important to all children, with and without disability. Join us online as we discuss the evidence in favour of inclusive education, the policies and supports that work towards inclusion at school, and tips on how parents can work confidently and effectively with their child’s school for an inclusive education.
This workshop is relevant for parents and carers of children with disability of school age, or younger, who are wanting to know more about inclusive education. We also welcome any interested supporters or community members wanting to learn about the importance of inclusion in schools.
