PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Ms Jillian Pass

As always, it’s been a very busy and productive start to the school year at Currimundi State School. It’s hard to believe that we have reached the halfway point of the first term already.
Road Safety
You would be aware that our P&C and school leaders have been meeting to discuss road safety issues around our school, especially around the safety of our CURRA kids around pickup and drop off times, for a number of years now.
Last year we saw the Sunshine Coast Council continue the widening of paths around the school and the addition of speed cushions on the slip lane on Buderim St and this year, coloured ramps have been installed at the informal crossing points surrounding the roundabout of Cooroy and Buderim St. Always use designated parking spaces and drop off zones and DO NOT PARK on the YELLOW lines to best ensure the safety of our CURRA kids.
Please note the Buderim St carpark in to school is a staff carpark and not a parent carpark or drop off zone.

P&C 2025 AGM –Wednesday 05 March
The school and the P&C work tirelessly together to ensure we have a caring and positive school environment at our little school by the be ach.
We are looking forward to our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 5 March, at 3:00 pm in the staffroom. This will be followed by some nibbles and a chance to mingle—we’d love to see you there!
At the AGM, all P&C roles are vacated, and anyone is welcome to nominate for any position. To help you decide where you might like to contribute, we've attached role descriptions for your reference. However, we are particularly keen to fill the following positions:
✅ Assistant Secretary – Work alongside our wonderful Secretary to share the load and help keep things running smoothly.
✅ Assistant Treasurer – Support our Treasurer, learn the ropes, and help manage finances in a collaborative way.
✅ Fundraising Officer – This role has been revamped! We’re looking for someone to lead just one major fundraiser per year and act as the go-to person for teams running individual events. You’ll also maintain our donations register and events calendar.
✅ Communications Officer – If you enjoy Canva, social media, flyer design, or newsletter content, this could be the role for you! Help keep our school community informed and engaged.
✅ Grants Officer – This is a high-impact role, and no prior experience is required! Council offers free training, and we’d love someone to help seek and apply for grants that will benefit our school.
✅ Garden Officer – Leads the coordination of working bees for our edible school garden. This is a fun, hands-on role that’s perfect for anyone with a green thumb (or a willingness to get their hands a little dirty!). Grandparents or community members are also welcome — we can help organise a volunteer Blue Card if needed.
2025 Parent Representative
In 2025 we are moving to whole year parent rep groups that will continue throughout your child's Currimundi State School journey. To stay connected and up to date please join the group(s) that correspond to your child/ren's year.

2025 is a Musical Year
Disney Frozen Jnr auditions are well underway under the expert leadership of Mrs Tracy Gillespie and Mrs Alison Schulz as well as other teachers responsible for other aspects of creating a musical performance. Make sure you keep an eye on the 2 new large noticeboards opposite the tuckshop to keep up with what is going on.
Excursion communication and deadlines
This year we are endeavouring to send out Excursion details and invoices in the term before the excursion/incursion occurs so that all costs are finalised well ahead of time. Parents/carers are reminded that during parent partnership meetings that you were sent an excursion overview for the year. This informs you of the approximate cost of the event/excursion and when it will occur.
Yours in education

Year 06 Investiture and Stanley River Leadership Day

On Friday 28 February all year 06 students have been invited to the Stanley River Leadership Day - this is a great day run in our hall by the qualitied staff from Stanley River. The focus is around working in a team, collaboration and stepping up as a leader.

Year 06 High School Transition information
This week year 06 families have been sent the 2025 Year 6 Transition Calendar for Students and Welcome letter.
The welcome letter contains some really important information as a parent/carer, please ensure you are familiar with what catchment your child is in as this will determine their high school. You can find out your high school through the following link:
Please be aware that Scholarships for all our local state high schools are now open and there is a information session for parents/carers and students in our hall Wednesday 5March from 2:00pm onwards. I look forward to seeing you all there!

PREP
Our Prep Year students have met every new event with confidence and a can-do attitude! The Preppies came to watch our very first PARADE in Week 2, then in Week 4 were active participants and coming u to receive Super Surfer awards with the Year 01 and 02 students! Our Prep classes have been very busy with hands on activities and starting their InitiLit (Sounds and letters) program. Additionally, most Prep students participated in the FREE Prep Vision Screening this week.

PARADES
Our PREP to Year 02 Parade is on the EVEN weeks of the Term, with the next one being on Monday 3 March at 2:00pm in the School Hall. Come along to watch parade, hear messages, the rule of the week and other school items shared. On Monday we will celebrate the February Birthdays, then in 2 weeks’ time will celebrate the March birthdays.
Year 01 NEWS
Our Year 01 students have been busy with settling into their class with their new friends. We see a growing confidence in them daily. Drop offs that may have been a bit tricky are fast becoming a smooth, positive experience.
Year 01 information has been sent home via email regarding the upcoming Excursion in Term 2 – SEALIFE Mooloolaba. If your email has changed or if you have not received it, please contact the office to update details. Paper notes will no longer come home.
Consent has been sent a few weeks ago, check your email! We have the majority of these in already. Invoices have also been sent. This year we are aiming to disperse excursion details a term earlier. Payment and Consent are due by Friday 4 April.
DETAILS: On Wednesday 7 May 2025, we will be visiting Sea Life Mooloolaba as part of our Year One Science program for Term 2. The aims of the excursion are to observe animals in their habitats, learn how they adapt and survive and how their habitat meets their individual needs. The visit will enhance student learning and support the Science topic. We will travel by bus to the venue.
YEAR 02 NEWS
Our Year 02 students are settled and excited to be at the “top” of the lower school. At lunch times we see them being great role models to the younger students. QUOKKA Reading and Story Dogs began in the past week in year two. Both Programs support a LOVE of READING for our participating year 02 students. A highlight was Willow and Jazz visiting this week for the first time!

Year 02 Incursion (at school) – Term 2 – HOW DOES IT WORK?
Consent has been sent a few weeks ago, check your email! We have the majority of these in already. Invoices have also been sent. This year we are aiming to disperse excursion details a term earlier. Payment and Consent are due by Friday 4 April.

All year 02 students will attend a full day activity session conducted by the Sunshine Coast Environmental Education Centre (SCEEC) staff in our school hall. The students will work scientifically through play and investigation and will have the opportunity to experiment with different toys and games that involve pushing and pulling. At the end of the day students will have made three simple toys using a range of forces to make them move. EVACUATION DRILL WEDNESDAY 05 MARCH
As a school, across the year we must complete 4 Safety Drills.
The two types of drill are:
- EVACUATION
- LOCKDOWN
On Wednesday 05 March we have planned an EVACUATION DRILL.
To signal an evacuation the following will happen:
Sounding the Alarm – 4 rings; then a voice says ‘Evacuate as directed’ 4 times; then the same alarm, but softer, will ring continuously until the drill is complete.
The students evacuate to their allocated oval with their class or supervising teacher as directed, where class rolls are taken and all staff and students are accounted for. The bell will stop ringing when the drill is complete.
The entire drill usually finishes within 15 minutes. Class teachers will speak with their class about this and we recommend that parents also chat with their child.

NAPLAN in March 2025
As children progress through their school years, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.
The NAPLAN test window is 9 days:
Wednesday 12 March 2025 to Monday 24 March 2025
In preparation for NAPLAN, Year 03 & Year 05 students will be completing an omnibus (mixed) test to familiarise students/teachers with the test environment and to identify any problems that may be encountered.
To explore what the online test platform will look like for students and the nature of questions, you can visit the Public Demonstration website. This site provides example tests across each test area.
What’s new in the demonstration tests?
There is now a narrative task and a persuasive task for students to practise. Only one of these tasks will be tested in NAPLAN 2025, and this will be revealed on the day of the assessment.
Students will now start the conventions of language test with the spelling items and finish with the grammar and punctuation items.
Privacy
Policies and procedures are in place to ensure personal information is protected in the online environment.
Read more about privacy and personal information collected for NAPLAN from the link below.
Parent Teacher Interviews | Term 1
Year Prep - Year 06

As part of our school’s commitment to effective reporting, we are offering the opportunity for parents/carers and teachers to meet to “Understand the Learner”. This allows parents/carers and teachers to communicate before a formal report card is issued in term 2.
The purpose of the “Understand the Learner” meeting will be to:
- Provide individual student progress in areas such as reading, maths and spelling.
- Encourage parent/carer teacher cooperation and build confidence.
- Gather and discuss important information about your child e.g., family background.
- Discuss personalised homework needs.
- Discuss attendance and its direct link to learning.
More details to follow later. 😊

Welcome to 2025.
Digital Library – Education Queensland-Sora App
All Currimundi State School students have access to a digital library which contains over 75,000 eBooks and audiobooks.
The e-library can be accessed by visiting the Sora website, or downloading the free Sora app on a mobile device, then searching for the school 'Education Queensland' and logging in using their MIS ID.
Happy reading!
Accelerated Reader 2025-MILLION WORD TREEHOUSE

Year 03 – 06 students have started their 2025 Accelerated Reader journey-
“MILLION WORD TREEHOUSE”.
Students have completed their Star Reader Test to find their Accelerated Reader level and are now reading and completing quizzes to start their word count journey!
Student’s read and successfully complete quizzes to accumulate the word count from each book.
Certificates are earned and presented by the classroom teacher for 10 and 50-thousand words; then by Mrs Tolliday for 100,000 and 250,000 words in the class, and then presented at assembly for 500,000 and 1,000,000 words.
Student’s photo will also able to be placed on the Million Word Treehouse Board in the library to track their progress towards a million words.
If that’s not enough there is also an amazing new competition to kick off the year.
It’s called BUILD A TREEHOUSE
How it works: Students will get a sheet with all the parts of a treehouse. As they complete and pass a quiz, the teacher will sign one part of the tree house, when all parts are signed, cut out and assemble the treehouse and put it into the entry box in the library. Students may build as many treehouses as they can until the closing date.
PRIZES: A new book kindly donated by Andy Griffiths!
Closing Date: Friday 28 March 2025
That is incredible!
Don’t forget quizzes can be done in the library before school and at first break.
BOOK CLUB
Book Club Issue 2 will be sent home with students next week.
In here you’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $3).
The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. The school no longer accepts payments using cash.
Last day for orders: Friday 7 March
Please order via the online LOOP Parent Login:

BOOK FAIR
The Book Fair is coming!
It will open from Monday 31 March to Friday 4th April (last week of term 1).
Come by before or after school and support our school whilst getting your hands on the best new children’s books!
The containers are always full of a large variety of books, activity packs, pencils, rubbers and posters available to purchase.
Keep an eye out for more information over the next few weeks.
What Can I Borrow?
Prep and Year 01 students can borrow 1 book from the Junior Fiction/Junior Non-Fiction Sections.
Years 02 to 06 students can borrow 2 books from the Accelerated Reader, Junior Fiction, General Fiction, Non-Fiction or magazines (Year 03 - 06) at their teacher’s discretion.

This is a fairly brief meeting, followed by some nibbles and a relaxed chance to chat with current members and learn more about how we work to support the school community. Everyone is welcome!
If you’d like to have voting rights at the AGM, please complete the membership form here: P&C Membership Form. We also welcome nominations for any of the P&C positions, which are advertised on our P&C Facebook page.
💚Celebrating Our Student Leaders 💚
It was an absolute privilege to attend the Year 06 Leadership Investiture—what an incredible group of young leaders! The dedication and enthusiasm of these students to make their school the best it can be truly reflects what we strive to do within the P&C. Currimundi should be so proud of the calibre of leaders they are developing.
We look forward to seeing you at the AGM and working together throughout the year—let’s keep riding the waves to success! 🌊🏄♂️

P&C Fundraising News!
Hello Curra Families
By now you should have your picture plate templates at home and we hope there is some wonderful art being produced in your homes.
Templates are due into tuckshop by Monday 10 March - Payments are to be made via Munch Monitor. Help us raise money to purchase new laptops for our Curra kids!
Later in the term we will send out our “Fill the Pantry” flyer - this helps us stock up our tuckshop with much needed supplies and therefore means P&C funds can be used elsewhere.
And Drumroll please Curra families…………
We have a disco coming up on Thursday 27 March, please keep a look out on how to purchase tickets - this event will be STRICTLY presale tickets only, so please grab tickets while you can as we would hate to see you miss out.
As we transition to a new way of fundraising, we need to make some changes to ensure our volunteers can continue to bring you events - we realise these changes might at first be hard, but they are necessary for us to be able to provide our community with quality events.
As always, we welcome anyone interested in pursuing a role in the P&C to reach out to us or come along to a meeting.
Thanks
Bec
(Fundraising Officer & Vice President)

YMCA OSHC NEWS

The children are settling in to the routines for the new term. Physical play once again is popular both in the mornings and afternoons. To increase time for outside play has been a focus for staff this month both in the mornings and afternoons. Friday afternoons we have trialed going straight outside on arrival for afternoon tea and ball play. We also set up quieter activities of drawing and construction in the shade taking advantage of the ocean breeze. hockey, cricket, soccer, basketball, group games and handball have been popular both in the mornings and afternoons. The children’s creativity has been supported through dance, drawing and craft. Valentine’s Day art was very popular with the children wanting to make presents and cards for their families and friends. The construction zone was very busy with children creating houses, vehicles, airports and towers. This then extended into imaginary play. Overall, it was a busy month for both our service and school.

Thank you, The Y Staff.
