PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Ms Jillian Pass

Term 1 has been a very productive time at Currimundi State School.
The last few weeks in particular have been busy with Cross Country, NAPLAN, Parent Teacher Interviews, term 1 assessment, disco and musical practices. All of which have been run brilliantly.
We had a record number of families take up the opportunity to attend our term 1 parent teacher meetings over the last fortnight. I hope that these interviews have been informative and that you have had a chance to share with the class teacher how you feel 2025 has commenced for your child.

Our 2025 P&C
I would like to acknowledge and thank our P&C committee for their dedication and commitment to improving our friendly little school by the beach from each year and announce the office bearers for 2025.

Currimundi SS ANZAC service - Thursday 24 April
Our whole school 2025 ANZAC ceremony will be held in the first week of Term 2 on Thursday 24 April commencing at 9:00am. We have planned a special ANZAC service that includes a special guest and participation from each class laying a wreath.
Parents are welcome to join students and teachers at our school ANZAC service.

Readers Cup is an annual event organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state-wide competition for young readers in Years 5 - 10. Teams of four students together read a set of books, and then compete with other school teams to answer quiz questions from the books. Readers Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.
This year our school will be conducting our own Reader’s Cup Challenge where each year 5 and 6 class will have a team of 4 students. Each student will have 4 books to read prior to our ‘mini tournament’ early in Term 2. During the tournament teams are required to answer varying degrees of difficulty questions that show their comprehension levels of what they have read. From this, the winning team will progress to the regional tournament day at Immanuel Lutheran College on 17 June 2025. A huge thank you goes to Mr Fulcher for creating Currimundi’ s own Reader Cup event in the year of Reading at Currimundi State School.
Triple P- Positive Parenting
Our Student Wellbeing Psychologist, Megan Laws, will be delivering free parenting seminars in term 2. Parents/carers are welcome to attend one, two or all three of the seminars. Book your free spot by emailing admin@currimundiss.eq.edu.au
Details are as below.
Week 2 - Year 06 room
The Power of Positive Parenting: For every parent who ever wondered: “Why does my child do that?” This seminar helps you understand the reasons kids do what they do, so you can guide their behaviour – and see more of the behaviour you like, and less of the behaviour you don’t like.
Week 3 - Staffroom
Raising Confident, Competent Children: You can help your child become confident and successful – at school and beyond. Find out ways to encourage them to be respectful and considerate, communicate and get on well with others, feel good about themselves and become independent problem solvers.
Week 5 - Staffroom
Raising Resilient Children: How can you help your child manage their emotions so they cope well with disappointment and in stressful situations? Get the strategies that will allow them to recognize positive and negative emotions – and deal with them in a healthy way.

Yours in education

Deputy Principal | Yr 03 - 06 | Amelia Tolliday

Wow - that term went fast – we certainly have achieved so much here at Currimundi over the last 10 weeks. I am so proud of all our students and want to extend my thanks to staff who go out of their way to make every day engaging, supportive and joyful for our students.
As most are aware this is my first Term at Currimundi I would like to thank all students and families for welcoming me to the community. I have met many of you however for those I haven’t please remember my door is always open, and I would encourage you to always pop in and see me if required.
This term I have been telling students about my ongoing adventures with my guinea pigs – for those who have not had my saga, my 6 females somehow turned in 13!!!!!
This term the students did a great job of helping me come up with names for my 7 new babies – the winners were announced on our whole school parade Monday week 10. My tale has created great interest across our school and during week 10 I was honoured with a gift from 4C, which I will certainly treasure. Thank you 4C!

Some highlights from Term 1 include:
- Cross country
- Disco
- Year 04 Rock pool visit
- Turtle guest speaker and Discovery Van visit
- Year Stanley River Leadership Day
- Book Fair
- Camp Quality Puppet Show
- All abilities day
- Sparks
- Year 06 Investiture
- Plus many, many more!
Year 05 and 06 STUDENT TUCKSHOP ASSISTANTS
This term we have had several of our Year 06 Leaders assisting in the tuckshop – a big thank you to them. During the term we have also been taking expressions of interest from students in years 05 and 06 (students must be 10) that would like to help in the tuckshop for the remainder of the year. The response has been overwhelming and we have already started training for some of these students.
If your Year 05 or 06 child applied, please check QParents for parental consent and details of duties.
Attendance
I’m a big believer in “Everyday Counts” and students’ maximising their attendance at school. In my many years in education I have seen the direct correlation between attendance and positive student achievement and wellbeing.
Here at Currimundi State School we encourage students to attend everyday as we know that students do better when they go to school all day, every day. In the case where your child is not able to attend school it is vital that you contact the office to let them know that you child will be absent.
We thank parents and caregivers for their support in working towards above 90% attendance.

I wish all out students, staff and families a wonderful and safe Easter break – see you all next term.

NAPLAN 2025
Thank you to our dedicated Year 03 and 05 teachers and our hardworking Year 03 and 05 students, NAPLAN ONLINE 2025 was a success! Students were focussed on producing their best efforts and very respectful of the test conditions required for us in the administration of these tests. We are so very proud and appreciative of the way in which the students went about completing the tests to the best of their ability and they should be congratulated. The data and information we gain from NAPLAN drives ongoing improvement at school, state, and national levels.
Last week we conducted the Numeracy tests. We have also provided catch up tests for students that may have missed some or all the NAPLAN tests last week.
How is my child’s performance reported?
NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. They are set at a challenging but reasonable level expected for the child at the time of NAPLAN testing, based mainly on what has been taught in previous years of schooling.
Student achievement is shown against 4 levels of proficiency:
Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.
A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided by your child’s school later in the year. If you do not receive a report, you should contact your child’s school.
How are NAPLAN results used?
- Students and parents/carers use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
- Teachers use results to help identify students who need greater challenges or extra support.
- Schools use results to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- School systems use results to review the effectiveness of programs and support offered to schools.
- The community can see information about the performance of schools over time at myschool.edu.au

This week, as part of our school’s commitment to effective reporting, we offered the opportunity for parents/carers and teachers to meet.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to the ‘Learner Connection’ meetings.
The ‘Learner Connection’ meeting provided an opportunity for teachers, parents, and carers to discuss and share:
- student achievement.
- learning behaviour.
- children's progress.
- goals for improved learning and achievement in future.

Readers Cup 2025

HOW IT WORKS:
Readers Cup is an annual event organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state-wide competition for young readers in Years 05 - 10.
REGIONAL COMPETITION FORMAT:
- Five rounds of questions with each round having one question from each book
- Teams of four sit around one table or just on chairs with clipboards. A ‘spare’ player sits away from the group.
- Students may confer to write the answer to the question on a prepared answer sheet.
- Students are normally given 30 seconds to complete their answer. The competition allows more time for some questions that require more writing.
- Teams may substitute a member at the end of any round.
- Answers are collected at the end of each round. They are given points for their correctness. (All questions have equal scores with 2 points for a correct answer and part points for an incomplete answer.)
- The scorer keeps a tally of the scores. Progressive scores may be announced throughout the event.
- Team with the highest score goes to the state final.
ONCE SCHOOL TEAM IS SELECTED:
- Hold team meetings to discuss the books and to make up questions to ask each other.
- The spirit of the cup is for the teams to organise their own reading schedule and approach to understanding the books.
Coaching is not allowed
2025 READER’S CUP TEAM SELECTION SCHEDULE:
TERM 1:
Weeks 9: Class team selection (1 team for each Year 05/06 class)

YMCA OSHC NEWS

March has been an exciting month at YMCA, filled with laughter, learning, and lots of play! The kids have absolutely loved exploring the new school playground—it's been a huge hit and has added so much fun to our outdoor playtimes, both in the mornings and afternoons. We’ve embraced cultural diversity with themed activities that sparked curiosity and creativity, and our little artists have been busy creating numerous sketches, inspired by educational videos we watched together. The imagination didn’t stop there—our talented kids organised several amazing talent shows, showcasing their unique skills and confidence!
Adding to the excitement, we introduced some fantastic new equipment, including bouncy balls with emotions and upgraded play kitchen resources, which the kids can’t get enough of! March has been a month of growth, joy, and endless energy—here’s to more fun and learning in the months to come! As we wrap up an action-packed Term 1, we’re excited to carry this energy into the school holidays, filled with more fun, adventure, and new experiences!

Thank you, The Y Staff.
