PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Ms Jillian Pass
Welcome back to all our returning and new families in what will be another busy and productive term 2 at Currimundi State School.
There are a great number of exciting things planned for our school community throughout the term. We have Senior and Junior Athletics days, Frozen musical practices increasing for our term 3 performances, a variety of year level excursions/incursions, TUFF Curra and our new Reader’s Cup competition to name only a few of the scheduled activities.
2025 ANZAC Day commemoration at Currimundi SS

The Currimundi State School ANZAC service that was held in our school hall last week was a wonderful service that all students and classes were able to participate in. Our special guest speaker for this years’ service was Mrs Georgina Carman from the Caloundra CWA and Mr James Woodbury representing the Currimundi State School P&C.
Thank you to all the families that braved a bit of inclement weather to join us to march as a school for the Caloundra ANZAC Day march on Friday.
School Uniform
With the cooler part of the year coming on it is timely to remind you that all articles of clothing should be clearly named. This is especially important in the cooler months to avoid the huge pile of winter jackets/coats that always seem to accrue and that are not named.
A reminder that during the winter months, students are permitted to wear black tracksuit pants and a (bottle) green school jacket or (bottle) green coloured jumper.
Guidance Officer Week
It’s Guidance Officer Week (28 April to 9 May) and we’re celebrating the invaluable contribution of our guidance office, Tracey Axelsen. Guidance Officers provide our students with educational, career, mental health and wellbeing support.
If you think your child could benefit from advice and support, contact Tracey Axelsen through our front office on 54366888.
Visit the Education website for more information.

Yours in education

Welcome back to Term 2! What a big term we have ahead with lots to look forward to.
I hope you all had a lovely holiday with family and friends!
I certainly had a great holiday with my little family seeing the sights of Sydney and visiting Rainbow Beach.

Week 1 Term 2 – ANZAC day celebration and thanks
Last week our school had our ANZAC parade – thank you to parents/carers and community who attended this very special event where we reflected on the sacrifice that have been made by those who have served.
Attending ANZAC Day ceremonies and events is a meaningful way to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country. Our school parade was a chance for us to come together as a community, to remember the past, and to show our gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy today. Our school parade and those students that marched on the Friday help to ensure that the legacy of the ANZACs is passed on to future generations.

Thank you for your school spirit, Currimundi!
We have a very busy term coming up……. A few important events for our students in year 03 to 06 are below but please continue to check for updates regarding events via the following:

Year 05 and 06 Tuckshop Helpers
In Term 1 a number of year 05 and 06 students put in an application to be a volunteer at our school tuckshop – WaveBreak. Students who volunteered have been through a safety induction and added to a roster. Students will not be reminded of their roster so will need to note down their dates and breaks they are responsible for – we would appreciate parents/carers support with this.
Thank you to these students who volunteered. If you child would like to help (must be year 05 or 06) it is not to late – ask them to get an application form from their teacher or administration.
Walk to school day

National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.
The event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 16 May 2025
The objectives of WSTSD are:
- To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
- To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
- To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
- To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
- To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
- To promote the use of Public Transport.
- To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
- To reduce the level of traffic congestion.
As a school we will be participating in this event – keep a look out on Facebook for further details.
Attendance
Every newsletter I speak about the importance of attendance. I’m passionate about student learning and know that the best way to achieve is to be at school every day. At Currimundi we strive for over 90% attendance rate and I am happy to report that school wide we are on track.
It is important that if your child is away, you let the school know the reason for their absence by calling the school, adding the reason to QParents or replying to the absence SMS. Over the next few weeks, we will be reviewing any unexplained absences and contacting families for the reason so we can update our system. Thank you in advance for your support with this.
If you are worried about your child’s attendance or know they will be required to have an extended period of time off please contact the school.
I will be joining the year 06 students for camp this week so will see our students and families from week 3 onwards.

The Australian Curriculum
The Australian Curriculum sets the learning goals for all students as they progress through their school life – wherever they live in Australia and whichever school they attend, and when parents/carers are actively involved in their children’s education, children achieve better results.
The goal for the Australian Curriculum is to develop successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed young people who are ready to take their place in society. To achieve this goal, the Australian Curriculum includes 3 parts:
- 8 learning areas which are sometimes referred to as subjects,
- 7 general capabilities which as sometimes known as the 21st century skills
- 3 cross-curriculum priorities
The Australian Curriculum is used flexibly by schools and teachers who plan the learning for all their students while taking into account each student’s needs.
You can visit the Australian Curriculum V9.0 website
to learn about:
- how the Australian Curriculum is organised, including information about the learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities
- what students learn in each band of schooling (Foundation, Years 01 – 02, Years 03 – 04, Years 05 – 06, Years 0 7– 08 and Years 09 –10)
- how schools can use the Australian Curriculum to support diverse students' needs.
- when states and territories are implementing the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0

TUFF CURRA
How TUFF are you?
On Friday 20 June, Currimundi State School will be running its 12th Annual TUFF CURRA. For new parents/carers to the school, TUFF CURRA is our famous, unique obstacle course fundraiser. Students will get an hour session to do unlimited laps of the course with many fun obstacles to navigate. It is a colour explosion activity so students will come out looking like a walking rainbow!
Last year’s fundraising effort along with some grants obtained by the school helped to put the new basketball/netball/handball court in the Yr 05/06 area and went towards the new Yr 01/02 playground.
Each student will receive a fundraising brochure with lots of wonderful prizes that can be achieved for raising different levels of money. Prizes start at only $10! There is also a 'Go Green' option to plant a tree or a piece of coral in the ocean. Donations can only be made online.
Every year I ask "How TUFF are you?"
Kind regards,
Gareth Jones

Readers Cup 2025

HOW IT WORKS:
Readers Cup is an annual event organised by the Qld Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state-wide competition for young readers in Years 05 - 10. Teams of four students together read a set of books, and then compete with other school teams to answer quiz questions from the books.
Readers Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other students with an equal passion for books.
REGIONAL COMPETITION FORMAT:
- Five rounds of questions with each round having one question from each book
- Teams of four sit around one table or just on chairs with clipboards. A ‘spare’ player sits away from the group.
- Students may confer to write the answer to the question on a prepared answer sheet.
- Students are normally given 30 seconds to complete their answer. The competition allows more time for some questions that require more writing.
- Teams may substitute a member at the end of any round.
- Answers are collected at the end of each round. They are given points for their correctness. (All questions have equal scores with 2 points for a correct answer and part points for an incomplete answer.)
- The scorer keeps a tally of the scores. Progressive scores may be announced throughout the event.
- Team with the highest score goes to the state final.
ONCE SCHOOL TEAM IS SELECTED:
- Hold team meetings to discuss the books and to make up questions to ask each other.
- The spirit of the cup is for the teams to organise their own reading schedule and approach to understanding the books.
Coaching is not allowed
2025 READER’S CUP TEAM SELECTION SCHEDULE:
TERM 1:
Weeks 9: Class team selection (1 team for each Year 5/6 class)
- Team of 4 students selected based on reading age/interest
- Meet Mr Fulcher for team workshop and book distribution
- Reading of the books begins
Beginning Term 2: School Tournament Day
Teams meet for the tournament day and the 2025 school team will be the winning team from this day.
TERM 2:
2025 team meets weekly and given the 2025 Titles to read in preparation for the Reader’s Cup Day on 17 June 2025.
SCHOOL TOURNAMENT TITLES:
NB: One copy of each title will be distributed to each Year 05 and 06 Class

“Inside out Day” Emotions day helped children to reflect on their feelings and make sense of their emotions through learning and play. This movie is a favourite here at OSHC.
The Excursion to Maleny Gardens and bird world: The children learnt some very interesting facts about birds and farm animals. We noticed the children gained confidence with the interaction with the birds and this was shown by how many lined up to have the birds sit on their shoulders and heads.
Easter was celebrated with an Eggstravaganza day. The children participated in an Easter Hunt; created their own Easter Bonnets and made Easter cards and Sand Art Pictures.
“Learn to day” The children learned how to box, play hockey, jump in sacks, sign language, bubble paint and create volcanos.
Throughout the holidays the children loved active play outside and various games inside. The playground has also been popular. Children practiced their creative skills through art and craft which was programmed each day. We also had lots of fun in the kitchen cooking.

Thank you, The Y Staff.
