PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Mr Aaron Willis

Principal’s Welcome – Term 3
Dear Currimundi State School Community
My name is Aaron Willis and I have been appointed as the new Acting Principal of Currimundi State School. I have worked in educational leadership for a number of years across a range of school contexts, and I am proud to also hold the substantive principal role at Mapleton State School. I’m particularly looking forward to getting to know the amazing “Curra Kids” and meeting the families who play such an important role in supporting the school. Building strong relationships with students, staff and families is something I value deeply.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding leadership of Ms Jill Pass, who has contributed so much to the Currimundi community over her years of service and wish her well in her retirement. It is clear that Jill, along with the school’s leadership team, teaching staff, and support personnel, has built a school the whole community can be proud of. I am committed to continuing this great work and ensuring every student is given the opportunity to ride the wave of success.
I’m also thrilled to share the fantastic academic results achieved by our students in Semester 1. More than 92% of our students across the school achieved a C or better in English, with 52% achieving an A or B.
In Mathematics, over 94% of students achieved a C or better, and 64% reached an A or B. These results are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our dedicated staff, supported by our families at home.
Term 3 is full of fantastic cultural and sporting events, with the calendar already looking jam packed. Preparations for the school musical has been underway for a while now and we are all looking forward to opening night in week 6.
Our rescheduled Athletics Day will be on during weeks 7 and 8, and the Beach Carnival in Week 10, all wonderful opportunities to come together and celebrate the talents and achievements of our students.
An early reminder that Friday 5September is a student free day, regular classes will not be held on this day and the school will be closed.
Thank you for the warm welcome I have already received from staff, students and families. If you spot me around the school, feel free to come and say hello at any time.
Warm regards
Aaron Willis
Acting Principal
Currimundi State School
Deputy Principal | Yr 03 - 06 | Tina Houtsma

Grateful to Be Back
What a joy it is to be back at Currimundi State School! After spending the first semester as Acting Principal at Bundaberg South, I returned this week to the most heart-warming welcome. From the smiles and high fives of students to the warm greetings from staff and families, it truly felt like coming home.
It was incredibly special to reconnect with our amazing students and staff. Walking through classrooms, catching up in the playground, and sharing laughs and stories reminded me just how strong and special our school community is. I was genuinely moved by how many students remembered me from their early years.
I feel honoured to return as Deputy Principal, this time supporting our wonderful Year 03 to 06 students. Many of these students I had the pleasure of working with during their time in Prep to Year 02, and it’s been a delight to see how much they’ve grown both academically and in height during the years. I had to ask many of them not to stand up, as so they are now taller than me. 🤭
While I know the early years well, I also recognise there are important differences in the upper years that I’m eager to learn and catch up on. But just like our incredible Curra kids, I’ll be striving to ride my waves to success as I settle into this next chapter.
A Busy Term Ahead
Term 3 is shaping up to be an exciting and action-packed one. With a full calendar of sporting events, there’s plenty for students to look forward to, including our rescheduled Athletics Carnival (after last term’s washout), our much-loved annual Beach Carnival, and Years 05 and 06 Interschool Sport. Year 04 students will soon be heading off on their excursion to St Helena Island, and our Year 05s will be packing their bags for camp, which will be an incredible opportunity to build confidence, independence, and friendships. Several year levels also have incursions planned, so please keep an eye on the calendar and upcoming communications to stay across all the important dates and details.
NAPLAN Results – A Moment to Celebrate
Families of students in Years 03 and 05 will have received their child’s NAPLAN results this week. These results are just one snapshot of your child’s learning journey, but they also provide an opportunity to pause and celebrate their effort and progress. I hope you were able to take a moment to sit with your child, acknowledge their hard work, and reflect on their growth with pride.
Continuing the Learning Journey Together
As we dive into Term 3, I want to reassure families that I’m here to support not just your child, but you as well. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I truly value the partnership we share in your child’s education and look forward to working together to ensure every student continues to grow, learn, and thrive.
Here’s to a fantastic Term 3
Kind Regards
Tina

- Shawl
- Robe
- Bow Tie
- Grey Beard/Moustache
- Cane
- Knee high socks
Or USE YOUR IMAGINATION!!

During the day we will participate in a range of activities relating to the number 100.
We look forward to meeting our elderly residents!
YEAR 01 NEWS
The Semester started with 1T, 1V and 1C all moving into classrooms within in the larger Library building. In the coming weeks, there will be a new line up area for the 3 classes, with a new area for bags. Your classroom teacher will let you know when this will start.
We would like to thank teachers and parents/carers for their patience and understanding whilst these changes have taken place. The students have been very flexible with the changes and are now settled and into their Semester 2 learning.

ICAS Assessments | 2025 Current Year 02 – 06 Students

It’s not too late! Registration for all subject areas closes on Monday 28 July at 11:59pm.
We know our students are always looking for the next challenge, so we’re giving them the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their talents in the world-renowned ICAS competition this year.
What is ICAS?
ICAS is an online academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee, and Digital Technologies.
Every student who participates is celebrated and recognised with a printed certificate in each subject area, and an online results report to track development each year. Top performers are eligible for one of the highly coveted ICAS medals.
There is an early start time for these assessments so that normal school is not interrupted.
These are optional assessments. You can elect to participate in one, some or all the assessments.
This year, our students can elect to sit the following assessments: 😊

If you wish for your child to participate in ICAS this year, please go to the Parent Portal to sign up to your chosen subject areas using the link and code below.

NAPLAN Individual Student Reports | Current Year 03 & 05 Students
Students in Years 3 and 5 will bring home their individual NAPLAN student report this week, showing their achievement in each test domain.

The reporting of NAPLAN results to parents and carers has changed and is now reported on according to 4 levels of NAPLAN proficiency:
- Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
To support parents and carers’ understanding, ACARA has produced the Information for parents and carers brochure. Alternatively, you can access the NAP website here:

YMCA OSHC NEWS

We had so much fun over the school holidays. The children and staff were so excited with the great weather and the sun shining throughout the holidays. The playground and games outside kept us busy throughout the holidays. The highlight of the holidays for the children and staff were our incursions of Mini Golf, Nerf Wars and Fit club. Active play was a big part of our program.
The children showed their excellent cooking skills on the baking day and we learnt all about various animals and showed our dance skills and secret talents on the circus day. We celebrated our Indigenous culture through games and art last week for NAIDOC week.
Term three has come quickly and we are excited about our After-School Care Incursions we have planned and of course Art club is always popular.

Thank you, The Y team.

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL – FREE FAMILY BOOK WEEK EVENT
DICKY BEACH SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB – 2025/26 NIPPER SIGN ON DAYS
2025/26 Nipper Sign On Days
We are holding two Sign On Days for families who are interested in joining Dicky Beach SLSC's Nipper program. We offer a fun, physical, outdoor activity for children between the ages of 5 -14 years. Nb. Children aged 5 may join if they have an older sibling at Nippers or an active (patrolling) parent/guardian at Dicky Beach SLSC.
Our program is primarily focused on participation and friendship and also provides a solid base for competition in surf sports. Our Nippers are taught everything from sun and surf safety, beach sprints, board paddling and first aid skills like CPR. The program offers pathways towards surf lifesaving and vocational education for older children interested in the healthcare industry.
Our Sign-On Days this year are Sunday 10 August (11am – 2pm) and Sunday 17 August (12pm – 3pm) at Dicky Beach Surf Club for registration, followed by a pool evaluation at Sunshine Coast Recreation Precinct (Currimundi Rec Centre). Children need to bring their togs, goggles and a towel to do their swimming proficiency.
