PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Mr Aaron Willis

From the Principal’s Desk
As Term 3 draws to a close, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received since joining Currimundi State School. Having worked in many schools during my career, I can honestly say that Currimundi is a wonderful place to work and, more importantly, a great place for our students to learn and grow. This is thanks to our dedicated staff and the supportive community that surrounds our school.
This term has been jam-packed with events and opportunities for our students. A special thank you goes to the staff, students, and families who contributed to our school musical production – what a fantastic showcase of talent and teamwork! It was an event thoroughly enjoyed by all. I would also like to acknowledge our dedicated P.E staff for their organisation of the Junior and Senior Athletics Carnivals held recently. These days are highlights of the school year, and I remind families that the House and Age Champion Awards will be presented on Monday during our whole school parade.
In exciting news, Currimundi SS has recently been approved to participate in the Sunshine Coast Council’s RideScore initiative. This program encourages more of our students and families to engage in active travel to and from school. Thank you to our P&C for their ongoing advocacy and support in making this possible. Building on this, we have also met with representatives from the Department of Transport and Main Roads and, in partnership with the Department of Education and our P&C, are applying for a grant to upgrade our bike parking facilities, including new concrete pads and racks.
I also recently met with our YMCA Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) provider. The YMCA is committed to offering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for our students. However, feedback is an important part of improving the service. Parents/carers of students attending YMCA OSHC are encouraged to provide feedback through their website: YMCA OSHC Feedback. All feedback is reviewed by senior management and communicated to the regulatory authority.
I am also pleased to share that, due to popular demand, our school-based Psychologist will once again be running the Circle of Security Parenting Program in Term 4. Expressions of Interest are now open, please contact the school office for more information if you would like to be involved in this valuable program.
On a more personal note, I would like to share that our long-serving and dedicated Head of Special Education Services, Rita Jermyn, will be finishing her distinguished career in education at the end of this year. Rita worked at Currimundi for 26 years and has been a supportive and familiar face at for a long time, and her presence will be deeply missed by students, staff, and families. We will begin the recruitment process to backfill Rita’s position during Term 4 and will communicate the outcome with our community once confirmed.
As we look toward the final week of the term, I wish all families a safe and enjoyable spring break. I look forward to finishing Term 3 together next week on the beach, the perfect Currimundi way to end a busy term!
Did You Know? – This Week Is Child Protection Week
Child Protection Week is an important reminder that student safety is everyone’s responsibility. In schools, we take this responsibility seriously. Actions include:
- Staff undertaking annual Student Protection training.
- Clear reporting guidelines and processes to ensure concerns are acted on quickly.
- Working closely with the Department of Education and external agencies to keep children safe.
- Teaching students about respectful relationships, protective behaviours and the Daniel Morcombe Foundation education program.
Deputy Principal | Yr 03 - 06 | Tina Houtsma

This term has flown by, and it’s been packed with rich learning, exciting events, and plenty of opportunities for our students to shine.
Student Leadership 2026
I’m excited to share that the process for selecting our 2026 student leaders has now begun! At Currimundi State School, we believe every Year 06 student is a leader, and this process gives students the opportunity to take on formal roles such as School Captains, Vice-Captains, Portfolio Captains, and House Captains.
The upcoming holidays provide a great chance for our Year 05 students to prepare their applications and think about how they can contribute as future leaders of our school. I encourage parents and carers to have conversations with their children about the opportunities available and the qualities that make a great leader.
A reminder that applications are due to the office by Tuesday 07 October (first day back). We look forward to seeing our students’ leadership qualities shine through this process.
Focusing on Student Success
Our school priorities continue to guide our work, supporting students to achieve strong results in English and Maths and delivering high-quality, engaging lessons aligned to Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum.
This term, teachers have used pre-assessment data to provide students with individual feedback on their next steps in learning. This process helps students take ownership of their learning and strive for their personal best.
As a staff, we’ve also been learning from one another. During this week’s staff meeting, we visited classrooms across the school to view and discuss our Learning Walls. These walls are an important tool we use to make learning visible and support clarity for students. The learning walk was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the great work happening in classrooms and share ideas around how we can continue to strengthen our practice together.
Athletics Carnival
After being postponed a few times due to wet weather, we were so excited to finally hold our Athletics Carnival — and what a fantastic two days it turned out to be! The sun was shining, and the students had a lot of fun participating in events and earning points for their houses.
Congratulations to everyone who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, and just as importantly, congratulations to every student who gave it their all, encouraged their peers, and showed true Curra spirit throughout the carnival.
Get Ready for the Beach Carnival!
The countdown is on for our Beach Carnival next Thursday 18 September at Dicky Beach — and we can’t wait! This is always a highlight on our calendar and a chance for students to show off their Curra spirit, teamwork, and beach skills.
✅ What to bring:
- School hat
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Swimwear (rashie or swim shirt must be worn)
It’s going to be a fun-filled day with plenty of cheering, sandy feet, and smiles all round. Let’s hope for perfect weather and a brilliant celebration of effort, participation, and house pride!
A Little Help from Home
As we work together to finish the term strong, we’re asking families to support us by having a couple of quick but important conversations with your child:
- Scooters and Bikes on School Grounds
Please remind your child that scooters and bikes must be walked through the school gates and not ridden on school grounds. This rule is in place to help keep everyone — especially younger students — safe during busy arrival and departure times. - Using ‘Talk, Walk, Squawk’
If your child shares that they’re having social issues at school, please ask if they’ve used our “Talk, Walk, Squawk” strategy. This helps build independence and problem-solving skills while also giving students a clear process to follow.
- Talk to the person calmly "stop it, I don't like it"
- Walk away if it continues
- Squawk—tell a trusted adult at school
We want to support every student, but we can only help if we know. Encouraging your child to speak up means we can work with them to solve problems early and positively.
Thanks for being our partners in helping students stay safe, confident, and respectful at school.
Thank You
As we approach the final stretch of the term, thank you once again for your continued support. It has been a busy and rewarding term, and we truly value the partnership we share in your child’s learning journey.
We hope all our families enjoy a safe and relaxing break. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday 07 October, refreshed and ready to tackle the final term of 2025 together!
Kind Regards
Tina

ICAS 2025
Congratulations to all the students who participated in ICAS this year!!
Sitting an ICAS test is a milestone shared by generations of students.
Parents/carers will receive an email from ICAS to let them know they can view the results and how to do this.

There are lots of certificates and schools – so our school can expect to receive certificates approximately 4 weeks after the final sitting day for each subject.
After all sitting windows have closed and results are finalised for all subjects, ICAS prints the certificates, quality-checks them, and then mails all certificates to schools in a single delivery. This takes between 10 to 13 weeks – there are lots of certificates and schools to get through. When we receive the ICAS certificates which have the results printed on the back, we will hand them out to students on parade. This can take some time to plan, and we appreciate your patience with this.
For ICAS the Award Levels are:
- HD = High Distinction
- D = Distinction
- C = Credit
- M = Merit
- P = Participation
Parents/carers and students can access their own results using their TAP-ID and PIN:
- Students that have sat ICAS at our school before can find their TAP-ID and PIN on the back of a previous year's certificate and will also receive their TAP-ID and PIN.
- Students that have sat ICAS at our school for the first time this year will receive their TAP-ID and PIN.
For more information, please check out the Parent/Student guide about how to access online reports.

Year 1 Phonics Check
What is the Year 1 Phonics Check?
In Year 1 your child’s teacher is able to use the quick and easy Phonics Check to better understand the phonics knowledge of their students. The Check looks at how well your child can 'decode' written words. The teacher will listen to how the child sounds out the letter and letter groups and how they blend these sounds together from left to right to make words.
The Phonics Check helps your child's teacher and the school to confirm whether your child is making their expected progress in reading. Teachers and schools can then use this information to inform their teaching program.
How does the Phonics Check work?
- Your child will sit with a teacher they know and be asked to read up to 40 words aloud.
- These words are a mix of real words and made-up words (sometimes called 'pseudo words', 'non-words' or 'nonsense words').
- Your child may have read some of the words before, while others, like the made-up words will be completely new.
- The Phonics Check normally takes just a few minutes to complete and is carefully designed not to be stressful. There is no set time limit for it and if your child is struggling, the teacher will stop.
What words are in the Phonics Check?
The Phonics Check includes a mix of real words and non-words. The teacher will tell your child before the Phonics Check that there will be made-up words that they will not have seen before. Children might be familiar with this because many schools already use non-words when they teach phonics.
Non-words are important to include because words such as ‘vap' or ‘jound' are new to all children. Children cannot read the pseudo words by using their memory or vocabulary; they have to use their decoding skills. This is a fair way to assess their ability to decode.
After the Phonics Check
Your child's teacher can tell you about your child's progress in phonics and their results from the Phonics Check. If your child has found the check difficult, the teacher should also tell you what support has been put in place to help them improve. The check ensures that teachers understand which children need extra help with phonic decoding.
Remember that all children are individuals and develop at different rates.
You can find some great ideas for supporting your child to read through phonics in our Resources to support reading at home.
Supporting the Phonics Check at home
Here is a list of words similar to the ones used in the school Phonics Check. You can practice these words at home with your child. To help you, here is a guide to how your child should pronounce the words.
- Make any comments or any questions you have on the pronunciation guide as your child reads the words. You can then discuss your observations with your child’s teacher.
- Let your child know that some of the words are real and some are made-up words. The made-up words are the names of the friendly monsters pictured next to the made-up words.
- Try to choose a time when your child is feeling happy and relaxed. It is important that your child feels good about their efforts in reading the words to you.
Your child’s teacher will explain the different letter sounds and letter–sound combinations your child has been learning in class. They will be able to tell you what you can expect your child to know and how you can help them improve their knowledge of letter sound relationships and reading at home. You might like to ask how you can support your child to take the next step in reading.
CHANGES TO BLUE CARD REQUIREMENTS
Get ready for the upcoming blue card changes on 20 September 2025. Parent volunteers will require blue cards if services or activities do not include their own child; if they attend overnight excursions or camps; or if assisting other children with toileting, bathing or dressing. External businesses providing services in schools or to children will also require blue cards. For more information about the changes visit
CIRCLE OF SECURITY PARENTING PROGRAM – EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST NOW OPEN
Being a parent/carer can be both rewarding and challenging. Sometimes it can be hard to know exactly what your child needs from you and how best to support their emotional development.
The Circle of Security Parenting™ Program (COSP) is an evidence-based 8-week program that helps parents/carers understand and nurture secure attachment with their children. Through simple but powerful concepts, it helps parents/carers:
- Better understand their child’s emotional world
- Support their child’s ability to manage feelings and build resilience
- Strengthen parent–child attachment and security
- Gain confidence in responding to challenging behaviours

📰 Currimundi P&C – Term 3 Wrap-Up
Hi Curra families,
What a term! From the sparkle of Frozen Jr to the buzz of the Father’s Day Stall, Term 3 has been packed with Curra spirit — and we couldn’t have done it without you 💚
🎭 Frozen Jr – A Magical Weekend
A huge thank you to the staff, students, parents/carers and volunteers who brought Frozen Jr to life. The show was a true celebration of talent and teamwork — and it was amazing to see our community show up and cheer them on!
🎁 Father’s Day Stall
Thanks to all who helped run the stall and to our students for showing such kindness and Curra manners. We hope the lucky recipients loved their gifts!
💰 We Hit Our $10K Goal!
We’re thrilled to share that Term 3 fundraising has helped us reach our $10,000 goal! Combined with $20,000 from last year’s profits, we’re proud to be donating 30 new laptops for students to use in class. Thank you for making this possible!
🎨 Mural & Culture Project
We’re excited to announce that the P&C has committed $15,000 to fund a mural by a Gubbi Gubbi artist on our school hall. This includes cultural learning for all students — a long-held goal we’re proud to see coming to life.
🚴 Transport & Safety Update
In partnership with the school, we’re continuing to advocate for safer parking and pathways. We’re excited about RideScore’s arrival in 2026 and are working together on better bike parking to support active travel.
🫶Supporting All Kids at Events
We’re proud to now offer a P&C sensory kit for use at events like the school disco. Students can access the sensory space using this equipment, and we’ll also have a small number of earmuffs available to borrow (sign-in/sign-out) for those who want to enjoy the disco but find it a little too loud.
♻️ Containers for Change
Want an easy way to support the P&C? You can donate your bottle and can refunds directly to us using our code:
