Shrek Jnr Musical - What a brilliant success
Currimundi State School has a proud tradition of giving its students the opportunity to be part of a musical performance. This year’s Musical stood out for many reasons. The initial meeting of interested staff was over a year ago, auditions began early in term 1 this year.
The performance over last weekend brought together about 120 students from yr 03 to yr 06 – the biggest cast ever for a Currimundi SS musical. Students, staff and talented parents/carers have given much of their time and effort to develop the polished performances that happened on the weekend.
Staff will miss the lunch hour calls over the PA system for “All rats and fairies to the hall, skeletons to the music room etc”.
The talented and like-minded students that you saw on stage over the weekend have worked hard with our equally talented staff and parents/carers to create memories that will last a lifetime and to bring to life the musical Shrek Jnr.
It is only through the dedicated staff and school community members who support and coordinate the student’s involvement in creative arts that a musical is possible. Their participation in the performance empowers students to step out of their comfort zone, form lasting friendships, embrace the joy of performing and ultimately allow them to take pride in their achievements.
Congratulations to everyone involved. I hope you had the opportunity to watch one of the performances.

School Review
In term 2 our school underwent a quadrennial school review process. School reviews play an important part in how the department supports school improvement. They provide schools with independent feedback, tailored to their context and needs.
Our staff will use the review findings to work with their school community and regional supervisors to develop clear actions to move the school forward. I have included the infographic below to illustrate a summary of our school’s review findings. The Executive Summary report link below will give more detail and is located on our school website. We have many celebrations to take away from this review including our strong line of site into each student’s learning and the collaborative culture of our school community.
Before and after school use of grounds and play equipment
There is no before or after school playground supervision provided by the school. The use of our school grounds is only allowed (as signed in each of our playgrounds) if parents/carers are actively supervising their own children.
It is the supervising parent’s/carer’s responsibility to ensure that their children follow the same school rules that are expected during the school day to outside school hours to minimise the risk of injury. This includes the safety rules about how we use the play equipment e.g., taking turns, going the right way down a slide etc. It also includes walking not running on the cement.
Parents/carers also need to be aware that school toilets are cleaned ready for the next day and are locked by 3pm each day.
Our neighbours, who live along our fence line are a friendly bunch who return any balls etc. that may be kicked into their yards as we do not enter their properties to retrieve equipment during school hours. I had one upset neighbour contact me this week about some after school behaviour where students entered his yard without permission and some damage was caused to his tended gardens as the children retrieved their equipment. Please be mindful of showing courtesy to our neighbours.
2023 School Opinion Survey
Thank you to all of those who have already completed this year’s Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday 18 August 2023. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2023.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Yours in Education

Deputy Principal Prep – Yr 02 | Mrs Tina Houtsma

End of week 5! We are halfway through term 3. Everyone is doing a wonderful job and the feedback has been extremely positive from teachers and parents/carers. We continue to thank you for your efforts.
Last, Friday 04 August 2023, we celebrated Australian Primary Principal’s Day
Thank you, Ms Pass, for your unwavering dedication to supporting our students and leading our wonderful little school by the beach!
School Musical
A huge congratulations to each and every individual who contributed their time, dedication, and passion to make the school musical an outstanding success. The performances were nothing short of remarkable, and the hard work put in by all involved truly shone through in every polished moment. What made this musical even more remarkable was the sight of our students, even those typically reserved or quiet, stepping onto the stage with unwavering confidence and genuine enthusiasm. Witnessing our students wholeheartedly embrace their talents and radiate self-assuredness under the spotlight was truly heart-warming.
Volunteers needed
2B students are thoroughly enjoying Friday mornings with our delightful volunteers through the 'Reading with Quokkas' program. To sustain this wonderful initiative, we're seeking a few additional dedicated volunteers who can spare 1 hour on Friday mornings to read with our Year 02 students. If you're able to contribute your time, please let us know. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Book Week
Dust off your imagination and get ready for the upcoming Book Week celebrations! This year's theme, "Read, Grow, Inspire," encapsulates the very essence of our journey through literature. The much-anticipated event invites all students to step into the shoes of their favourite book characters.

Fostering Resilience
Resilience entails the capacity to recover from challenges and setbacks when they arise. In the context of our students, setbacks could include conflicts with friends during playtime, not securing a victory in a game, or grappling with a sense of unfairness. Resilience empowers them to bounce back and manage problems in real-time. A fundamental aspect of cultivating resilience lies in acquiring the skill to rebound from difficulties effectively.
Here are three strategies that young students can embrace to enhance their resilience:

Reading Picture Books
Reading with your child is crucial for developing their early reading skills. They might bring home picture books from the library or classroom, offering a chance to boost their reading abilities. Besides reading the words, it's vital to ensure they comprehend the story. Here are some tips for effective home reading:
- Picture Walk: Before diving into the text, take some time to explore the illustrations on each page. Encourage your child to share their thoughts on what they think the story might be about based on the pictures. This helps them engage with the visual cues and make predictions about the narrative.
- Word Hunt: While reading, keep an eye out for new or unfamiliar words. When you come across such words, discuss their meanings with your child. This not only builds their vocabulary but also helps them understand the context in which these words are used.
- Retell: After completing the story, ask your child to retell the story in their own words, starting from the beginning and going through the events until the end. Encourage them to use the illustrations as prompts to remember key plot points. This exercise reinforces their understanding of the story's sequence and content.
- Compare and Contrast: Engage in a conversation about how the story is similar to or different from other stories they've read before. This helps develop their ability to identify patterns, themes, and narrative elements across different texts. Encourage them to draw parallels with characters, storylines, or settings from their previous reading experiences.
- Story Elements: While reading and after finishing the story, discuss various story elements with your child. Talk about the characters, the setting (where and when the story takes place), the main problem or conflict faced by the characters, and how that problem is resolved. This analysis helps them grasp the fundamental components of a story's structure.
By incorporating these strategies, you're not only aiding your child's reading comprehension but also fostering their critical thinking and analytical skills. These skills can turn reading into a more interactive and enjoyable experience, strengthening the bond between you and your child while promoting their love for reading.
Prep 2024 - Pre-Prep Transition Program
Thank you to all future Prep families who have already submitted their enrolment forms for 2024.
Starting school is an exciting time for students and parents/carers. The first step is to determine when your child can commence their Prep year by visiting the Department of Education’s Prep-ready calculator
If you have a child starting Prep in 2024, please notify the office as we are now taking enrolments.
Prep Tours
Last semester, I had the privilege of showcasing our friendly little school by the beach to many of our prospective 2024 Preps and their families. These tours will continue this term for families wanting to enrol or wanting to know more about what Currimundi has to offer.
I am looking forward to meeting many more prospective parents/carers. If you would like to schedule a tour, kindly use the provided link to book your spot online:

If we support our children to have a positive approach to learning, to be resilient and give things a go they will flourish!
Kind Regard

Beach Carnival 2023 | Thursday 31 August 2023
On Thursday 31 August our fabulous, one of a kind, Currimundi State School Beach Carnival is being held this term. Parents/Carers are most welcome to come along and spectate during this event which begins at 8:50am and finishes at 1pm. The information coming home this week via email and QParents details the exact times that different sectors of the school will be on the beach participating.
On the day, please ensure that your child is at school before the morning bell at 8:35am in order for us to start the day on time. Late arrivals will be walked down as a group and may miss some of the activities.
The day culminates in a 2:15pm whole school parade, presentation of winners and runner ups as well as the winning sports house. Parents/carers are most welcome to attend this event. Please ensure that you have completed permission in order for your child to be able to attend this event.
Full details are below.

Lockdown Drill Week Beginning Monday 14 August 2023
As part of our Education Queensland Workplace Health and Safety obligations, the school has practices for evacuation or lockdown once a term. Each year, teachers speak with their class about what to do in the different situations that may arise at school. Students practice the relevant responses across the year in order to ready them in the event of a real event.
The signal for a lockdown drill includes a beeping tone, lockdown being announced followed by classical music. The doors and windows in the room are locked and students are instructed to sit quietly on the floor. The lockdown ends when an announcement comes across the PA indicating so.
Please take this opportunity to discuss this with your children. It is an event that most would be familiar with, with the exception of our Prep students.
Tuff Curra
As another year closes on Currimundi State School Tuff Curra, we finalised our yearly SLIMING by those lucky enough to be drawn from our top fund raisers. William from Year 01 and Aurelio from Year 03 were our lucky slimers this year. Mr Brown and Mr Jones were the lucky recipients slimed in front of the whole school! The word on the street was that the slime was cold and very runny!
Our top fund-raising classes, 6C and 1T, also have their Pizza lunch next Wednesday. We look forward to the fun continuing next year!

NAPLAN Results 2023
We would like to commend your child for their efforts in participating in the NAPLAN assessment. This national standardised test is an essential tool for evaluating students' progress in key areas of literacy and numeracy. The results provide valuable insights into your child's strengths and areas that may need further attention, helping us tailor their education to meet their individual needs.
Please remember that the NAPLAN results are not the sole reflection of your child's abilities or potential. These scores are just one measure among many that help us understand their academic progress. Every child is unique, and we firmly believe in focusing on their overall growth and development, both academically and personally.
We encourage you to take the time to review the results with your child and use this opportunity as a positive learning experience. Together, celebrate their accomplishments and discuss areas where they can set goals and work towards improvement. Remember, the aim is not to compare your child with others but to support their growth and foster a love for learning.
If you have any questions or concerns about the NAPLAN results or your child's academic progress, please do not hesitate to reach out to their teachers or the school administration. We are here to support you and your child throughout their educational journey.
From 2023, new standards were introduced to NAPLAN reporting. This reporting replaces the previous numerical NAPLAN reporting bands and national minimum standards.
What NAPLAN assesses has not changed. Page 4 of the individual student report provides a more detailed summary about what students know and can do within each of the proficiency levels. Further information is available from the link below,

Kind Regards

2023 BOOK WEEK | Read, Grow, Inspire
The library will celebrate Book Week 2023 from Monday 21 August to Friday 25 August.
During Book Week we will have various activities in the library for students to join in.
We are all looking forward to the excitement of the Book Week Dress Up Day for Prep to Yr 04’s.
And… the visiting Author Performance Peter Carnavas, for Prep to Yr 06.
Book Club Issue 6 | DUE Friday 18 August 2023
Ou school participates in Scholastic Book Club. There are 8 issues per year (2 per term).
Issue 6 will be sent home this week or early next week!
In here you’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $3).
The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
Every book sold through Book Club earns free books and resources for our library for our staff and students to enjoy!
The school no longer accepts payments using cash. | Online Orders Only. NO CASH ORDERS
Due by Friday 18 August 2023

FESTIVAL OF BOOKS | Term 3
Due to the great support and success, we will be having another ‘Festival of Books’ this term.
Just a reminder of what the ‘Festival of Books’ is!!
- As the library continues to update our collection, we have many older books that are no longer being used.
- What can we do with these? The Innovation Team has decided that everything old can be used again!
- This is where the Festival of Books comes in!
- All these old and soon to be discarded books will be available to purchase during our “FESTIVAL OF BOOKS”. Keep an eye out for further information regarding when the ‘FESTIVAL OF BOOKS’ will be on again.
- Many of these books are old (not that there us anything wrong with OLD), but you will find some are in good condition (these are the books that we have numerous copies of).
- A coin donation for each book is all you need to grab a bargain!
- The money raised will be used to purchase new resources for the library.
- Help us create a sustainable future and stop all our books from ending up in a recycling bin or landfill.
- We will be donating any left-over books to schools in Papua New Guinea.
We thank you in advance for all your support.
