PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE | Ms Jill Pass

What a wonderfully eventful and productive term at Currimundi we have had.
Well done to the Curra kids who took up the challenge to ride the waves to success this term. Equally, I congratulate our caring and supportive staff for their continued efforts to maximise the learning for every student. At Currimundi, just like when learning to surf, we have a go and even if we make a mistake, we learn new knowledge from the mistake and we are then ready to have another go equipped with improved understanding.
At Currimundi we say:
‘Don’t sit on the shoreline, feeling satisfied. Choose to catch a wave. Dare to take the ride.’
Introduction to the Acting Principal
I will be taking leave commencing from term 4 and into 2024 to explore some of Australia. Mr Mick Connors has been appointed as acting principal in my absence. Mick is an experienced principal of many years. I will officially introduce Mr Connors to the school at the whole school assembly at our usual parade time of 2pm on Monday 11 September.
*2024 Class Formation Process
We are soon to begin the process of class formation for the next academic year. This process is always based on predicted student numbers with all provisional student placements confirmed on the eighth day of the new school year. We take this process very seriously; the benefits of making the right, evidence-based decisions can have long and lasting positive impacts on learning, social development and student well-being.
To assist us in this process, families are invited to submit the ‘Student Placement form’ see the link below, which provides the opportunity to communicate educational reasons that should be considered when forming classes.
All forms must be submitted by Friday 06 October.
*Not Returning in 2024?
The below link ‘Notification of Schooling form’ needs to be submitted to school to let us know if your child is not returning to Currimundi State School in 2024.
All forms must be submitted by Friday 06 October.
*Delayed Return to school in 2024?
Contact the office staff via email Administration@currimundiss.eq.edu.au if your child will not be present from the beginning of the school year e.g. extended holiday.
It is crucial that we know of all students who will be returning, but may be away at the beginning of the school year as they are also counted in our total enrolment and will contribute to maximising the number of teachers and other staff that we are entitled to.
Sparks | Years 04 to 06 – Uniquely Currimundi
What a great start to Sparks this semester. All students in Years 04 to 06 are in one of the 12 activities that our talented staff have created. Sparks will continue each Tuesday afternoon session until week 3 in term 4, Tuesday 17 October 2023. With two weeks down and four to go, our investigating and creativity are being Sparked! Sparks activities are being held on Tuesday afternoons in the last session of the day from 1:50 - 2:40pm (50 minutes) which commenced on Tuesday 29 August for a total of 6 weeks.
All activities will culminate in a ‘Festival of Sparks’ in Week 3 of Term 4 on Tuesday 17 October.

I wish all our families are safe and relaxing holiday.
Regards

Jill Pass

Deputy Principal | Prep – Yr 02 | Mrs Tina Houtsma

It's hard to believe that we're already approaching the last week of Term 3! Time has flown by, and it's incredible to see all the remarkable achievements of our students and staff over these past 9 weeks.
Please note that next term begins on Tuesday 03 October
As Monday 02 October is a PUBLIC HOLIDAY!
End of Term Assessment
Currently, our students and teachers are focused on the end-of-term testing and assessments. These assessments not only contribute to grades but, more importantly, offer valuable feedback to our students, helping them identify areas for improvement. Together, as a dedicated school community, we are committed to supporting each student's growth and success.
Book Week Parade
In Week 7, we celebrated our annual Book Week parade with the theme 'Read, Grow, Inspire.' It was heartening to see so many students participate and dress up as various book characters. We're grateful for the effort that both students and their families put into this event.
Celebrating Father’s Day
We hope all fathers and father figures within our community had a wonderful Father's Day last Sunday. Fathers play an essential role in shaping children's development and serving as their initial role models. We appreciate your influence and the positive impact you have on our students. A big thank you goes out to our P&C team and volunteers for organising and running the Father's Day stall.
Beach Carnival Success
Our recent Beach Carnival was a memorable and enjoyable experience for our students. I want to express my gratitude to our dedicated CURA staff for their hard work in planning, setting up, and executing this successful event.
Oral Health Lesson
Our Year 02 students had an informative and fun-filled visit from Dr. Michelle from Coast Family Dental Currimundi. Dr. Michelle revisited our school, building upon her previous visit earlier this year. During her visit, she delved into the specifics of maintaining excellent oral health and keeping the 'plaque monsters' at bay. Dr. Michelle engaged our young learners in an interactive discussion about the impact of different foods and drinks on their teeth. Together, they learnt about different foods and drinks and discussed whether they might be ‘sometimes’ or ‘everyday‘ foods. The kids loved the tooth fairy pouch and the floss tool will help reach the tricky spots :)
Thank you Dr. Michelle, and Coast Family Dental Currimundi for your time in promoting healthy smiles among our students."
Fostering Resilience
Resilience entails the capacity to recover from challenges and setbacks when they arise. In the context of our students, setbacks could include conflicts with friends during playtime, not securing a victory in a game, or grappling with a sense of unfairness. Resilience empowers them to bounce back and manage problems in real-time. A fundamental aspect of cultivating resilience lies in acquiring the skill to rebound from difficulties effectively.
Here are three strategies that young students can embrace to enhance their resilience:

Chapter Books: For students transitioning to chapter books, the journey brings both new opportunities and challenges in developing their reading comprehension skills. As the text complexity increases, it becomes crucial to employ effective strategies to ensure a deeper understanding of the narrative. Here are some key strategies to consider:
1. Preview: Before delving into a chapter, take a moment to skim the headings, subheadings, and glance at any illustrations or captions. This initial overview provides a sense of what to expect.
2. Reflect: During reading, pause at the end of each section or chapter to reflect on the key events, characters, and any questions that come to mind. Consider using sticky notes or a reading journal to jot down thoughts and predictions.
3. Vocabulary: When encountering unfamiliar words, practice using context clues. Examine the sentences around these words to decipher their meanings.
4. Discuss: After finishing a chapter, engage in discussions about the main ideas, character motivations, and plot developments with peers or educators. This reinforces comprehension and encourages critical thinking.
5. Connect: Encourage students to make connections between the text and their own experiences or prior knowledge. This helps them relate to the material and enhance comprehension.
6. Summarise: Regularly summarizing what they've read helps consolidate understanding. Encourage students to write brief summaries of each chapter or section.
By implementing these strategies, students can navigate chapter books with confidence, fostering a deeper engagement with the content and honing their comprehension skills."
Prep 2024 - Pre-Prep Transition Program

Thank you to all future Prep families who have already submitted their enrolment forms for 2024.
Starting school is an exciting time for students and parents/carers. The first step is to determine when your child can commence their Prep year by visiting the Department of Education’s Prep-ready calculator:
If you have a child starting Prep in 2024, please notify the office as we are now taking enrolments.

If we support our children to have a positive approach to learning, to be resilient and give things a go they will flourish!
Kind Regard

ICAS 2023

Congratulations to all the students who participated in ICAS this year!!
Sitting an ICAS test is a milestone shared by generations of students.
